Review: Hope and Other Punchlines by Julie Buxbaum

4/5 stars

This was a book I got for free at a book festival and not one I would have ordinarily picked out (shout out to whoever was giving them out, the publisher I presume). I am an unashamed judge of books by their covers and titles and this title made it seem like a tropey romantic contemporary book with basic heroines with One (1) Quirk and a funny strange love interest. And it kind of was... but it also wasn’t. Love and other Punch Lines was also a story of loss, survival, human connections, and most importantly, Life with a capital L.

It was a story of the aftermath of 9/11, how people remembered, forgot, and overcame. It was emotional, funny, and an ultimately uplifting journey and I am truly thankful to the publisher (?) who gave this book out for free and knew that people cannot resist free books even if their titles are somewhat misleading.

Have I learned my lesson on not judging books by their cover and title? No. No I have not.
