Review: The Toll by Neal Shusterman (Arc of the Scythe #3)

Isabella Z

3/5 stars - I did it! I finished the series!!

I'm not going to rehash how bad the Citra/Rowan romance is, or how underdeveloped all the characters are, so for reference, read my Scythe and Thunderhead reviews.

As for The Toll specific opinions: The ending was really rushed. I knew I should be concerned when the climax hadn't even happened yet and there were barely any pages left.

Goddard was a lame villain. He is one of those bad guys who is like a puppet villain, who is only the main bad guy for the first installment, before a bigger, better bad guy is introduced. Except in the Arc of a Scythe series, no better bad guy is introduced. Goddard is it.

Our main characters, Citra and Rowan, were really pushed to the side for most of the book. They didn't have much to do for basically the entire story, and they hardly moved the plot forward at all. Other side characters were much more instrumental in moving the story forward, and while I don't mind new characters being introduced and given importance, I don't like when they displace the main characters. If I read The Toll without reading the other books or a summary, I would never guess that Citra and Rowan were supposed to be the main central characters.

This was a fine book, with some good twists and some exciting action, and definitely better than Thunderhead, but it was still a mediocre end to a disappointing series that didn't live up to the hype.

3/5
