Review: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

4.5 stars

I went into this book fairly confident I was going to love it: it was exactly the kind of book I like, with a complicated and seemingly unlikable protagonist, along with an eclectic group of characters, leading to unpredictable friendships and unusual adventures. Furthermore, it seems like everyone in the world has read and loved this book. And I am happy to say that I was not disappointed: Ove was just as unlikable as promised on the surface, with a hero that I could root for underneath. All of the secondary characters were just as charming and idiosyncratic, and the story was packed with both humor and sentiment, with me alternating between laughing and crying in every line. The writing is simple but evocative, and presents Ove as a fully formed, opinionated person. I have to take off a half star from A Man Called Ove because at some points the characters could be just a teensy bit unrealistic. But it's okay!! Because I loved them anyway!! A Man Called Ove is a quiet and relatively slow-moving story that packs a big emotional punch and will make you love every one of these wonderful characters, especially Ove.
