Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

The closer we get to taking down Queen Levana, the more my skin glows of happiness, This sequel was thrilling, i could barley relax on my bed without panicking and being at the edge of my seat. It is getting really serious and I now very eager to finish the series and see how it all plays out because some very complex issues are present with these charters.

This book is the second installment in the Lunar Chronicles: a fantasy series that is a bunch of retelling of fairy tales in a dystopian world. What i love the most is that all the stories overlap and become connected. This book is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Scarlet lives On a farm with her grandmother, however one day her grandmother goes missing and she had no idea where she vanished. While looking for her grandmother Scarlet meets a mysterious street fighter named Wolf, who says he has information on her missing grandmother. The two them set out to find Scarlet‘s grandmother, during this adventure they meet Cinder ( the lunar fugitive). They team up with her to take down the tyrannical Lunar Queen Levana.

The plot was exciting and less chaotic than Cinder, I enjoyed Cinder when I first read it this summer however the ending was a little all over the place. This book was still chaotic and thrilling but not as messy as Cinder. The foreshadowing done at the end of the first book is becomes apparent in this book. The hybrid human-wolf monsters were a very interesting touch. I recall reading the scene and being very scared and confused as Cinder. I liked the information that we found out about the grandmother that connects to scarlet, It was unexpected but not if that makes sense.

In addition to reading Scarlet‘s point of view, I enjoyed the other POVs we got to read Which were Cinder’s and Kai’s. I like Kai more in this book, I liked him in the first book but in this book he shines. Seeing him trying to navigate His thoughts and responsibilities in a complicated situation was fascinating, his characterization was very strong. Cinder was my favorite POV to read in this story, seeing her handle herself in the life as a fugitive have more depth to her character and her banter with Captain Throne was hilarious. Seeing her discover more parts about her path and trying to confront the reality of who she is was thrilling and made me more excited for the series. Now i can’t forget about Wolf, wow what an interesting guy. He was complex and mysterious but not in the Stereotypical way, there was a juxtaposition with his character where he was threatening but caring simultaneously. Something about him being animalistic worked with me, I don’t have a reason.

Overall it was thrilling, I love reading about dystopian fairytales its very uplifting to see all of these powerful female characters. The main reason this is not five stars is beacuse I feel sometimes all of Scarlet‘s charmer was her grandmother and Kai and that’s it Which is ant bad but it would have been nice to see some of her own thoughts and expirences. That‘s the only criticism I have. Still this book was fun I can’t wait to read Cress.

4/5 stars
