Review: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

You know a book is incredible when you finish it in less than a day! From page one I was hooked and I just couldn't put The Road down.

Now I'm not typically one for dystopian novels, and I felt that The Road was pretty similar to all other dystopians I've read. However, the atmosphere, the worldbuilding, and the intrigue Cormac McCarthy produces make this novel stand out in the genre. I was immersed and curious about everything!

The stark, bare-bones writing style (though a little jarring at first and occasionally confusing throughout) perfectly fits the theme of the story. I love the creativity of the prose! Here is an instance of an author taking creative liberty with prose itself to paint the whole picture, rather than following typical fiction-writing guidelines. My one complaint (or rather, misunderstanding) is that some contraction words used apostrophes, while most others didn't. I never understood why the author chose to write this way. (Something to research!)

Despite occasionally being repetitive or dull, for the majority of the novel--especially towards the climax--I was on the figurative edge of my seat thinking: "Holy cow, what's going to happen next? How will they get out of this one?" I couldn't put the book down, couldn't look away from the page until I knew!

I am so glad I finally read The Road; it was more than I hoped it would be! I am definitely interested in reading more by Cormac McCarthy in the future. 4/5 stars
